Fifth Annual Report on Stress, 1955-56

چکیده
This current edition of the annual review of new developments in the field of "stress" follows the pattern of the previous ones. The first hundred pages are occupied by a summary of the concept of "stress" as developed by Selye and his colleagues. A great deal of this repeats material from previous editions, some of it word for word. A series of nine review articles is then inserted. These include a discussion of primary aldosteronism by Conn, the effects of hormones on inflammation by Dougherty, stress and the catechol hormones by von Euler, Seymour Gray on adrenal and gastric secretion, Dwight Ingle on the etiology of disease, Don Nelson on factors effecting adrenocortical secretion, Ernst Scharrer on neurosecretion, Spitz on psychiatric stress in infancy, and Stoerk on the lymphoid tissue, cortisone, and immunity. These authors are qualified and their reviews are interesting, although for the most part they don't add previously unpublished material. The remainder of the book, a total of 550 pages, is devoted to a bibliography arranged both in subject and author sequence. In addition to the bibliography, there is an index to the bibliography and a short handbook for interpreting the symbols which are used in bibliographic notation. The Fifth Annual Report of Stress, like its predecessors, will be of value to those who accept the basic tenets of Selye's approach to physiology, and the review section will also be of interest to anyone seeking an authoritative resume of recent advances in the areas under consideration.

This volume, the fourth annual supplement to Dr. Hans Selye's book "Stress", is unlikely to be of interest to the majority of readers. Although it does contain several original articles by authors of international repute on subjects of general clinical interest, the bulk of the 750 pages are taken up by an extremely comprehensive bibliography relating to recent research on the Stress Theory of ...

Parts III and IV deal with the actions of growth hormone in fat, nitrogen, and carbohydrate metabolism. The actions of pancreatic and adrenal hormones in these systems are related to and contrasted with those of growth hormone, resulting in a wide coverage of hormonal influences on metabolism. The work is at a level where the fundamental mechanisms of action can be discussed in terms of individ...

In our last issue we noted the Fortieth Annual Report made by the Board of Control to the Lord Chancellor, giving data about mental patients in 1953. Now follows, in quick succession, the Report of the Ministry of Health (Part I) and that of its Chief Medical Officer (Part II) reviewing the whole Health Service. By extracting the relevant information on Cental health we are able to indicate som...

essays represented the most stimulating part of the book to this reviewer. I was particularly interested in the papers by Simpson and Tait on Aldosterone and the one by Harris and Fortier on the regulation of the release of ACTH. All of the essays are useful, but their contents have appeared in previous reviews elsewhere, often by the same authors; indeed, Moore's paper on "Bodily changes in Su...
